Rachel + Seth :: Capitol Garden Wedding in Olympia

The right place at the right time….we all want to be there, don’t we? ;)   Even though Rachel & Seth didn’t know it at the moment, their right place was Snoqualmie Pass and the right time was during a ski/snowboard festival.  Seth was there to ski with his buddies – Rachel went to board it up with her friends.  The paths of the two groups crossed somewhere near live music stage (or maybe the beer garden? ;) ) and at the end of the festival everyone went home with memories of a good time……nothing more….or so they thought….Several months later, Rachel & Seth bumped into each other again – and remembered meeting during the festival. They chatted about the fun day at the mountain – and well, ya know – one thing led to another and Seth decided to ask Rachel out on a date, and the tale of their romance continued :)   Who says you can’t plant seeds in the snow? ;)

Rachel’s an artist by trade – she’s a stylist at Valley Hair Design – I swear, my palms get sweaty just thinking about the responsibility for creating a style that will promise a client 6 – 8 weeks of good hair days!! She found her gorgeous gown at one of our fave local shops, Weddings With Joy.  Since she’s a size – oh, about (-2) – she put her creative eye together with the amazing talents of her friend Judy, to design the right fit and add just the perfect amount of sparkle – and the results were breathtaking!  She also ordered all of her fresh cut flowers online, and together with family & friends, hand made her bouquet as well as all of the other bouquets, boutonnieres, corsages and centerpieces – talk about talent – she did an amazing job of turning her vision for color and decor into elegant reality!

Of course Rachel’s vision was perfectly accessorized with an awesome pair of purple shoes under her gown :)

Rachel & Seth wanted their bridal portraits to have a flavor of home – meaning the water and boats that are so ‘Olympia’ – so they chose to meet at the Swantown Marina for that all-important first look.  Now, Seth loves to tell a story, and he’s really good at it ;) So, while he waited for his bride to arrive, he couldn’t resist sharing yet another “right place at the right time” story that happened when he and his groomsmen stopped into local pub Pints & Quarts to “toast some sentimental bro moments” (as the guys put it :) ) on their way to the marina.

And then – several years, a house and two dogs after that mountain-meeting-by-chance ;) – Rachel and Seth were married in a gorgeous ceremony in the sunken gardens at the state capitol grounds.

There’s just something about the harp – sounds like it’s saying, “Come over here for a slice of Heaven” :) The beautiful music from Susan Haas’ (she is great!) harp floated on the air surrounding the gardens – if we weren’t already headed that direction I’m sure it would still have lured me right in!

Love these – total YAY-we’re-finally-married spontaneous moments just after exiting the gardens – can’t you just feel the excited emotion?!?!

And….the look on Seth’s face here …..need I say more? :-D

So – yet another “right place at the right time” story for these two – several months before their wedding, they attended a bridal event at the Heritage Room.  During the evening they won the grand prize drawing – a gift certificate for use of the the Heritage Room for their reception! Their rock-star entrance to the party was just the start of an evening of sharing good times and lots of laughs with friends and family.

A popular highlight to yet another amazing meal prepared by Occasions Catering was the mashed potato martini bar – yum! :-p

Best Man Jason likes to tell stories, too ;)

Rachel and her bridesmaids have all known each other since the age of 3 – how special is that!  That also meant that Maid of Honor Mindy had lots of great tales to tell – but said she was careful to only tell the “family appropriate” ones ;)

After cruising away for a honeymoon tour exploring the Oregon and California coastlines, Rachel, Seth and their two dogs are enjoying newly married life. We think we were in “the right place at the right time” when we had the good fortune to meet these two as they were finalizing their wedding plans :) Rachel and Seth – thanks for choosing us to document the story of your wedding – we’re looking forward to seeing you again soon :)

Lena + Kyle :: Fabulously Fun Olympia Wedding

So….this rugby player walks into a bar…..sounds a little more like the start of a colorful joke than the start of a romance, right?  Haha – well, not for this never-take-life-too-seriously couple :-D   They met when Kyle, mild-mannered-database-geek by day and blood-and-guts-y rugby player on the weekends, stopped into Ballyhoo Irish Pub for a post match pint or two with the team.  Behind the counter was Lena, with her adorable minnie-mouse-esque voice ;) bright smile, and a fun-loving twinkle in her eye.  They hit it off and the rest, as they say, became the kind of history Lena’s mom feared most, “be careful, and don’t date any customers ~ you might end up having to say you met your husband in a bar!”  (In all fairness, Lena’s mom told me during their wedding that she always hoped that Lena would find a wonderful man that would love and keep her safe, and that she believes Kyle is that man – we think so, too) :)

We knew we were going to have tons of fun with Lena and Kyle from the very first time we met.  Remember what I said about not taking life too seriously?  Example #1 ~ when we told them to plan a typical fun evening out for their engagement session, they both cracked up and explained that date night for them was usually

yep – we did their engagement session at Costco and Red Robin ;-)

Example #2 ~ Lena & Kyle had decided from the start that they wouldn’t be serving alcohol during their wedding day (haha, easy to do the math…..buy enough alcohol for the rugby team….or go on a honeymoon….;)…but they had big fun telling us about Lena’s mom’s reaction to this “faux invitation” that they sent to her…..

Example #3 ~ Although they share a fascination with lighthouses and originally planned to be married at one, Lena & Kyle decided that making it easy for their friends and family be a part of the fun celebration was more important. So, instead of asking everyone to travel to the coast, they chose the Olympia Country & Golf Club, prettied up with these lighthouse inspired decorations – and lots of company – for their big day.

Yum – not just beautiful but really tasty, too!

The reception was a perfect balance of elegance and whimsy, with details reminiscent of “the good old days”.  Guest favors included cookies that Lena & Kyle baked, frosted, decorated and packaged with their own hands, along with fresh-popped corn, lemonade – and an ice cream bar.

After a couple of weeks of exotic adventures in Thailand, Lena & Kyle are back home in Olympia – luring unsuspecting marks – er, uh – friends and neighbors into their backyard to whip them at a fiercely competitive game of croquet :-D

Caitlin + Rob :: Fun Olympia Wedding

Sometimes love is just meant to be….Imagine this:  Tenino, WA has a population of roughly 1,600.  Caitlin and Rob are both from Tenino, but – did they meet when they bumped into each other in the grocery store?  At the gas station?  Singing karaoke at the local tav? (sorry – that could be considered a trick question – knowing of their love for karaoke, many of their friends might think that’s the right answer ;) )  But NOPE – they happened to find each other while they were both traveling hundreds of miles away from home, in Mexico! And it wasn’t long after their return that they decided they couldn’t live without each other :)

We feel especially lucky to have played a part in their big day – their plans were built around family tradition and celebrating their relationships with family and friends – just the kind of day we love!!

The venue Caitlin and Rob chose for their wedding was the Schmidt House.  I get kind of choked up when I think about all of the special meaning woven through the details they planned, so you’ll have to forgive me if I stop to find a kleenex here and there ;)   The Schmidt family, original owners of this beautiful home that overflows with historic character, founded the Olympia Brewing Company – where Caitlin’s grandpa proudly spent his career.  She has many childhood memories of playing in the giant park-like yard around the house during annual company picnics.  Isn’t it cool that, during their wedding day, Caitlin and Rob’s 3 year old daughter would be able to create wonderful memories of playing in that very same yard!

The bride and bridesmaids started their day at Sunrise Hair Design – with eleven bridesmaids plus Caitlin and Jayden, it was a hoppin’ place!  The stylists’ abilities to make everyone feel welcome and keep the line moving were impressive :)

Sneak peek – absolutely love this moment – hair and makeup done, gown fitted perfectly, at last ready for those all important moments ahead – Caitlin glanced out the window and saw Rob, who was on the lawn below, anxiously awaiting his first look at his bride :)

While most people would assume that a wedding party of 27 was likely the bride’s idea – in this case, that would be a mistake.  Rob has a circle of guys whose friendship he values way too much to exclude any of them – so there were 11 each bridesmaids and groomsmen – yep, a fabulously dressed football team on each side ;) , plus a junior bridesmaid, ring bearer, and daughter Jayden as the flower girl!

Family jewels – Caitlin’s “something blue” was a brooch worn by her grandmother….

…and the European cut diamond in her engagement ring was passed down by Rob’s great-grandmother. Rob’s “first dad” gave it to Rob’s mom when they were engaged – when he passed away, his mom saved the diamond so that her then 2-year-old son could one day share it with his bride.

I’m thinking this detail was not family tradition – under her gorgeous white gown, Caitlin rocked these amazing hot pink Christian Louboutins – LOVE IT!! :-D

4th of July 2010

Summer is finally here. BBQ, cold beer, sitting by the fire, fireworks – good friends and big bangs. :-)

This 3 minute fusion video says it all: (click here to see it in HD)

Our friends Rich & Patty are fun and generous hosts, and have allowed us and many other families to make a tradition of spending the 4th at their amazing beach house – this year I think the guest count totalled somewhere around 60!! It’s a great party – boating, swimming, laughing and catching up with people we don’t see often enough. We soak up the sun (thank goodness – for awhile it looked like the sun might be the absent guest this year!) – eat too much of the great potluck, then sit by the fire and enjoy incredible fireworks….even though the calendar says summer started June 21, it seems like 4th of July signals the real start of summer in the PNW – and what a kickoff!

Columbia Winery :: Whitney + Kerry’s Fall Wedding

Happy bride and groom leaving the ceremony hand in hand - woodinville WA
Look at this happy couple – doesn’t their joy just jump off the page?!?! During the reception toasts, a dear friend summed it up perfectly, “When I think of Whitney, I think of two words: ‘music’ and ‘laughter’. ” No one could have put it better. And those words would also be an accurate description of Whitney & Kerry’s wedding day as well :) During our visits before the wedding, Whitney described her vision of an elegant occasion, decorated with warm fall colors that would create a cozy and welcoming feeling for their guests. She was a smashing success at bringing that vision to life – her wedding to Kerry at the Columbia Winery was all of that and more. Fashionably elegant, and warm with love of family and friends – and seasoned with laughter and beautiful music.

Looks quiet on the outside, right? On wedding day, Whitney’s mom’s home was bustling with bride and bridesmaids all having fun while they helped each other with hair and makeup :)

Brittany + Jeff :: Sweet Reunion

Have I told you I LOVE my job? ;)

Brittany is totally ‘the girl next door’ – beautiful, energetic, fun loving and… a smile….I know I’m not from the South, but.. a smile that my Texan friends would describe as “prettier than nine miles of white picket fence” ;) We met her last winter – she is part of a group of amazing women that keep each other company, lend a hand, cheer each other on good days and support each other through hard times, all while their husbands are deployed overseas.

Last Tuesday was not only Jeff’s birthday, but also the day he would arrive back home for well-deserved R&R – we were excited to have an opening in our schedule so that we could sneak up to SeaTac to meet Brittany and capture their long-awaited reunion :)

Army Homecoming Fort Lewis Seatac airport
Brittany's Smile

We rendezvoused at the American Airlines ticket counter at 1400 hrs – after some sweet-talking, the agent was kind enough to give us the gate passes we needed.

Everything that’s brought through security has to be x-rayed – we all stood back and covered our ears – sure that at least one or two would pop – but, luckily, no balloons were harmed during the documentation of our story ;)
Balloons going through the xray machine

Even though we were told that the flight would be arriving about 20 minutes early, it seemed like time was crawling by – until Brittany got the call from Jeff saying that the plane was on the ground and headed toward the gate.

I’m sure glad that I don’t have to be without Bill for months and months at a time – so many sacrifices our military families make on our behalf! Happy Birthday, Jeff! And Brittany, thanks for letting us be a part of this special day in your lives! Our wish for you is that the clock slows down and the next 21,600 moments are overflowing with happiness…. we hope you know how very grateful we are for your dedicated and generous service in defense of the freedoms we all enjoy.

Check out the fun video we made – or better yet;  click here to see it in high resolution. :-)

- R DUB - WOW! Great job! I can't believe how this turned out, I have tears in my eyes! I love it, and I am sure Britt and Jeff do, too! :-)

- Michelle - The photos turned out beautifully, thank you for sharing. I was sobbing - of course, that may be because I'm a military wife, as well as sister!

- nakita - these pictures turned out so absolutely beautiful.....i get teary looking at them. you guys did a great job capturing brit and jeff in this special moment.

Emily + James :: Together

We met Emily in December at a ‘party’ ;) for a group of young women who share friendship, fun, laughter and an unbreakable bond of support for each other while their husbands are deployed.  I’ve so enjoyed getting to know Emily – she is bright and beautiful – a high achiever.  Her friends tease about her title “Dr. Bradshaw” – yep, she has already earned a doctorate degree in the field of physical therapy, and I swear she gets as much accomplished before 7:30 am than I sometimes manage to pull off in an entire day! But what strikes me most when I think about Emily is her undeniable devotion to her husband, James, and her amazingly positive attitude.  I see her facebook posts – often mentioning happenings that might make the rest of us grumble or complain, but Emily never fails to find the positive spin.  I am sure I am not the first friend to compare her to Snow White ;-D

So, when we learned that James would soon be arriving home for R&R, we did some scheming with Emily and arranged to meet them for a photo session to celebrate their time together.  We met Emily, James and their four-legged ‘son’, Gunner, at Pt. Defiance Park for some playtime on a gorgeous spring day :)   Talk about two people that were absolutely made for each other!!  There is a quiet, yet at the same time – very powerful – strength to their relationship.  Take a look at this little video we created using images from our time and the park and I think you’ll see it too :)   Knowing that they took some time to go see George Strait in concert while James was home, we hope the music we chose to go with their photos will lift them both up with happy memories of their time together :)

And here are a few of our fav’s from the day:

I am sure that two weeks never go by quite as quickly as when couples are sharing R&R together…sigh…James is already back in the Middle East and Emily has gone back to her without-James-daily-routine.

Emily & James – we are honored to know you – here’s hoping that the rest of James’ deployment passes swiftly and safely for you both.  And straight from our hearts, please accept our prayers, support and gratitude for the sacrifices you both so willingly make on behalf of us and our entire country, in order to protect the freedoms we enjoy as US citizens.

Seventeen Hundred Reasons

Thursday, April 12, 2001 was the day I learned I was battling cancer. I was a single mom, in my 30′s and was in my third month of unemployment after a layoff.  The day actually started out great – a few days earlier I’d accepted an offer for a new job – a cut in responsibility and pay, but the proverbial ‘foot in the door’.  My kids were on spring break, so we’d decided to celebrate in one of our favorite ways – driving to the coast for an afternoon picnic on the beach. Feeling fine, I breezed out the door with the promise that I just had this quick check in with my surgeon – to make sure my incisions were healing well and likely remove sutures – and then I’d get back home, pack our lunch and we’d be off for a day of sand, water, and if we were lucky, maybe even a little sunshine. :) After all, the biopsy had been more of a precaution – just a measure to rule out any worries, as my symptoms were not typically associated with cancer and I was healthy, fit, and considered ‘too young’ for breast cancer – “odds are 1 in 10,000,” had been the surgeon’s words.

Well, as you can likely guess, the appointment turned into more than I’d expected – much more – as I learned this day would bring the most dreaded moment I’d ever face – having to go home and tell my three children, “I have cancer.”  But, that grueling task and its emotional fallout; and the loss of body parts that seemed so directly connected to my womanhood, and recovery, treatment, follow-up surgeries – those are all stories for another day.

Today I’ve promised to tell you the reason – the ’1700 reasons’ Bill and I arrived at $1700 as our starting point in the auction of our photography services for your wedding, and why we hope you’ll consider bidding to receive them. After reading that little ‘intro’ to my cancer story, I’m sure you can see why Sharlane’s story has touched me in such a personal way.  A single mom, while not “un” employed, Sharlane is self-employed – so her situation is basically the same as mine was – to step away from work to fight her cancer means no income to continue to support herself and her sweet little girl.  Make no mistake – cancer COSTS.  We all can relate to the emotional and physical costs – but with or without medical insurance, and in addition to the resulting lack of income, fighting cancer costs alot of dollars, too.

Less than four weeks after my bi-lateral (double) mastectomies, and against the wishes of my doctor (typical recovery time was a minimum of six weeks), I caved to pressure from my new supervisor and started my job. I was only able to work half time for the first several weeks. So – significant cut in pay plus a half-time schedule….you get it…not alot of physical or financial resources to support my family of four.  That wasn’t all – employment policy on the new job prevented me from using any sick leave benefits until I had worked full time for six months – so – add several dr visits per week into the mix, as well as seven weeks of daily radiation treatments … every dr visit, every radiation treatment – was unpaid leave.  Then there was the issue of the change to new medical insurance – including all new deductibles to satisfy out of my own pocket, and it seemed like, no matter how many times I called and provided the new info, it never reached the hands of the person filing claims…which resulted in tangled stacks of unpaid bills and denied claims. I got to the point of not wanting to answer my telephone as there was always some collection person on the other end saying something like, “we’ve billed your insurance company twice and they have denied the claims – your bill is now past due, and for the week of x-date to x-date, you owe us $21,700 for radiation oncology.” ….and on and on it went. Yes, cancer costs – and it doesn’t wait till you’re back on your feet, or through with treatment, or fully recovered…  Yes, eventually those situations were resolved, but the constant threats to my credit, along with my at best ‘limping’ income, took their toll. Please know – I know that I am lucky – no chemo, lots of loving friends and family, and I won the battle – these are facts that make me grateful every day.  But these details I’m sharing are real – and no matter how hard you are battling, or how exhausted you might be, or how much you wish you could give what little energy you have to your family instead of worries about money – they rear their ugly heads and demand that you deal with them.  Cancer costs….and the light bill, grocery bills and rent still come due.payitforward-2s1

A Gift from an Angel

So, there I sat on my front porch one afternoon, after months of scrambling and juggling to try to cover all my financial bases.  I’d been a good girl and had the recommended rainy day savings account, but the months of unemployment followed by the cancer battle had burned through every cent.  On this day, I was facing a new grueling task – my rent was due and for the first time ever in my life, I was going to have to call the landlord and tell him I wasn’t able to pay. I felt so defeated – my goal, in addition to survival – and reassuring/restoring confidence in my children that their mom wasn’t going anywhere – had been to come through this battle with grace and dignity.  The phone call looming over my head did not feel graceful or dignified, and I wasn’t sure what I would do if I couldn’t afford to rent a house for my kids and me.  I sat outside, knowing that as soon as I went inside, I needed to take the responsible step and make that call….I realized, “Hey, I haven’t gotten the mail yet today – there’s one more reason to stall another minute or two….”

As I walked back toward the house from the mailbox, I went through the stack of ‘usual’ mail – bills of course, junk adds, and then I came to a 5×7 manilla envelope.  It was lumpy, ya know, like it contained more than a card or letter; my name and address were handwritten on it and there was no return address.  I opened it and found a card – on the front was a photograph that anyone living in our area would recognize – it was the old brewhouse – the original brick building, full of old-time character, on the land that eventually became the home to the Olympia Brewery.  Inside was a handwritten message from an angel:

“Dear Ms Wheeler-

Please receive this gift as an encouragement and as an expression of God’s love and provision for you.  The prompting to give this came in a time of prayer.  Receive it and use it where you have need.  Who do you thank?  Give thanks to Him who is our maker.

You may have occasion to be a vehicle of giving to others in the years to come.

I believe you will.

You are greatly loved by the Father of Creation.”

There was no signature.

With chills running through my whole body and my heart pounding, I looked inside the manilla envelope again and found two smaller envelopes – I pulled them out to find that each of them contained a stack of 5′s, 10′s and 20′s – in all, $1,700….$1,700!!  Enough to pay rent, buy groceries and catch up on a few other bills – $1700 – enough to know that I would scrape by, and be able to make it through a few more weeks of short paychecks until treatment was over and I’d be mostly able to work full time.  $1700 – a gift of relief, a gift of confidence that I would win this battle with cancer, a gift of the ability to support my family. I studied the handwriting for days, weeks, months, years – it was unique and I have memorized what it looks like – always watching to see if I can spot the same writing from anyone whose path crosses mine.  So far, the identity of my angel is still a secret – as much as I would love to thank that person, part of me is glad that I haven’t solved the mystery – as obviously it was my angel’s desire to remain anonymous.

Today is the first time I have actually pushed myself to put pen to paper -  or fingers to keyboard – about my cancer, or about the story of this amazing gift. As I write, I’m realizing that – as much as I’ve worked to be the “vehicle of giving”, as my angel wrote – in the back of my mind I was afraid that letting go of how closely and privately I held this story would mean letting go of the confidence it bestowed. But that was not true. Today I realize that I was just waiting for the right time to share it. Today is a good day – make that a GREAT day – today I am excited because, like my angel said he/she knew I would, today is the day I get to pay it forward – I can’t tell you how much I have been looking forward to this day. Today my heart is overflowing with even more appreciation for my angel, because today I am receiving yet another gift from him/her – the chance to help someone who is in the same situation I was.
